Outdoor Shower Ideas for Cape Cod Homeowners

Back to Blog

An outdoor shower is practically a Cape Cod tradition. Whether you want something simple and functional or a fully enclosed cedar retreat, we cover the designs and materials that hold up best near the water.

If you spend time at the beach on Cape Cod, an outdoor shower is not a luxury — it's a necessity. There is no better way to rinse off sand, salt, and sunscreen before coming inside. It keeps the interior of your home cleaner, extends the life of your indoor plumbing fixtures, and adds a small but meaningful piece of Cape Cod living to your property.

The question is what kind of outdoor shower makes sense for your home.

Open-Air vs. Enclosed

The simplest outdoor showers are open-air — a showerhead mounted to the side of the house, a basic drain, and nothing else. These work fine for a quick rinse. They're inexpensive and easy to install. The downside is that they offer no privacy and no changing area.

An enclosed shower changes the experience entirely. With cedar or composite walls and a private changing room, it becomes something you actually want to use rather than something you tolerate. Fully enclosed outdoor showers also typically include hooks, storage for soap and towels, and a proper drain system.

Materials That Hold Up

Not all materials handle the coastal environment equally well. Here's what we recommend:

Cedar is the traditional choice for Cape Cod outdoor showers, and for good reason. It naturally resists moisture and insects, it smells incredible, and it ages beautifully to a silver-gray patina. It requires periodic treatment with a wood preservative or oil to extend its life, but it is genuinely suited to this environment.

Composite decking boards — the same material used for deck surfaces — are increasingly popular for outdoor shower walls. They require zero maintenance, never rot, and come in colors that hold up over time. They don't have the warmth of cedar, but they're a smart choice for homeowners who don't want any upkeep.

Azek or PVC trim is another low-maintenance option for framing and wall panels. It holds paint well and is completely impervious to moisture.

Drainage

This is the part that people underestimate. A poorly planned outdoor shower drain creates standing water, erosion, and mosquito problems. Depending on your property, you may need to tie the drain into your septic system, install a dry well, or route it to a gravel bed away from the foundation. Your municipality may have specific requirements. We handle this as part of every outdoor shower build.

Cold Water vs. Hot and Cold

A cold-water-only outdoor shower is the simplest and least expensive option. It works fine for beach rinse-offs in summer. A hot and cold setup requires running supply lines from your home, which adds cost but makes the shower usable in shoulder seasons and significantly more comfortable overall.

If you're building something you want to actually use and enjoy, the hot water line is worth it.
